We developed a procurement decision model, which takes into account partner selection and optimal order quantity with the integration of a planned production leadtime operational decision. Leadtime is taken into account in time and cost performance to achieve on-time delivery of a supply chain (SC) system. We contrast the three following original equipment manufacturer (OEM) conditions, (1) longer leadtime to the buyer but at a lower cost for the supplier, so the buyer has to add crashing cost to reduce the leadtime; (2) less leadtime to the buyer but at a higher cost for the supplier; (3) shorter leadtime to the buyer by adding crashing cost to reduce the inventory cost. Taking into consideration the impact of demand uncertainty directly to the buyers, we focus on simultaneous procedures in achieving an optimal solution. Our model considers an objective function consisting of operational costs and lead time decision under integrated supply chain entities (suppliers, sub-assembly manufacturers (OEMs), and buyers). Based on our numerical results, by trading-off inventory cost and leadtime crashing cost, the best possible combinations of partners in fulfilling demand from the market are B1-A2-S2 and B2-A1-S3. We found that these two combinations give $141,102.95 total profit per year to the SC system. We proposed appropriate strategies that could be applied at OEM by considering order arrival timing and leadtime.

This paper presents an exploratory study of lean manufacturing implementation in Malaysian automotive industries. A questionnaire survey is used to explore the extent of lean manufacturing implementation. This paper also examines the drivers and barriers that influence the implementation of lean manufacturing. The survey was performed on sixty Malaysian automotive components manufacturing firms. The respondents were chosen from those who are directly involved with lean manufacturing practices such as production and quality personnel. The findings show that most of the respondent firms are classified as in-transition towards lean manufacturing practice. These in-transition firms have moderate mean values for each of the five lean manufacturing practice categories. It is also found that these firms spend more attentions and resources in internal areas such as firms’ operation and management, compared to external relationships with suppliers and customers. These firms believe that the factors that urged the implementation of lean manufacturing are the desire to focus on customers and to achieve the organisation’s continuous improvement. The results from this survey also revealed the main barriers that prevent or delay the lean implementation. The main barriers to implement lean manufacturing system are the lack of understanding lean concepts and shop floor employees’ attitude.

  4. Conducting a Case Study in Supply Management
    • Anni-Kaisa Kahkonen
The aim of this article is to enhance the understanding about case studies as one of the research methods used in qualitative research especially in the research field of supply management. By using an example case study this article illustrates how a case study can be conducted successfully and how the validity and reliability of the research should be evaluated. The study shows that a case study as a research method is suitable for the research of supply chain management and purchasing and supply management. Because case study enables the collection of rich and profound data, an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon in question can be reached which can be highly critical for example in the development of supply relationships. The article has practical relevance especially for academic researchers in the fields of supply chain management, logistics, supply management and operations management by offering initial insights into the importance of the research process in case studies. Case studies have been criticized for the lack of rigor and thus it is important to highlight the significance of the accuracy and systematic way of action in the case research.

The purpose of this study is to understand the factors influencing outsourcing decision in the manufacturing industry. Existing literature reveals that manufacturing industry face with challenges in the competitive environment with expectation to produce products at the lowest cost possible yet meet customer specification without affecting the quality and delivery schedules. Thus, outsourcing has become one of the alternative opportunities among the manufacturing firms. The theoretical framework is developed to understand four components namely operating cost, new product development, internal resources and technology, and as well as management competency as the determinants of outsourcing decision. This is a quantitative research and survey instrument was used. The questionnaire was distributed to 150 firms in Northern region of Malaysia with a response rate of 45%. The data was analyzed using regression to test the hypotheses. The findings showed that capital investment, latest technology and high efficiency becomes the key determinants for outsourcing decision among the manufacturing firms. It poses some implications for managers and policy makers.

  6. Virtual Network for Diamond Supply Chain in Thailand
    • Duangpun Kritchanchai

Gems and Jewelry industry is one of the growing industries in Thailand. Not less than 17.7% of the exporting value from this industry is from diamond. Approximately 70% of total exporting diamonds are polished diamond. With the reputation of “Bangkok Cut”, the exporting rate seems to grow rapidly. However while we enjoy the export growth of these gems, the value add to diamond jewelry is still low. An attempt is made in this study to investigate the whole supply chain from rough cut diamond to polished diamond and to diamond jewelry. The diamond supply chain is modeled by SCOR model. Problems in the chain are reflected. It is found that Thailand has a potential to become the diamond exchange centre of the region. Surprisingly, the idea of value chain for gems to jewelry cannot be achieved. Instead, we test the solution of Virtual supply chain via E-marketplace. The architecture of this virtual exchange network is proposed. The strategy enforcing this network is then positioned.
